A grading scale is used to describe a coin’s condition. Mint State is an uncirculated coin graded in terms of a 70-point numerical scale, commonly used and was adapted by the NGC. The NGC grades coins on a numerical scale from 1 to 70, with 70 being the highest grade assigned. We currently stock a Mint State 66 (MS66) and a Mint State 67 (MS67). Both of these coins are highly desirable and are considered to be brilliant uncirculated coins.
Getting all of this right and minting reasonably attractive business strikes makes the MS67 grading an extremely high grade. The fact that there are only 22 MS68's and only 10 MS69's proves this.

Nelson Mandela is the most recognizable person in the world today. He spent 27 years of his life in prison that normally would make a person angry and embittered. Yet he came out of prison as a spokesman for South Africa and Africa. He is the consciousness of our nation, showing humility and humbleness that has united all South Africans. He is an inspiration to us all.
This limited edition R5 coin was minted to commemorate Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday in 2008 and has become known worldwide as the "Madiba coin". A small investment in a 2008 minted Nelson Mandela R5 coin today can show a substantial return in a few short years as they have a proven history of rapid increase in value. Up until now Mandela investment coins have yielded between 567% and 1000% returns.
South African Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni indicated that the portrait of Mandela wearing his signature pattern shirt on the coins differentiates him from other portrayals of states persons on coins.
This is a snippet from Nelson Mandela’s 1994 inaugural speech that says a lot about this great man:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves; Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented & fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of the Universe. Your playing small doesn't serve the world.
There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that others won't feel insecure around you.
We are born to make manifest the glory of the Universe that is within us,
It is not just in some of us: it is in every single one of us.
And as we let our light shine,
we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
And as we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
- Nelson Mandela

2011 South African Reserve Bank (SARB) 90th Anniversary R5 Mint State 66 (MS66) Coin graded and certified by the NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation).
The SA Reserve Bank celebrated its 90th Anniversary in 2011, and the SA Mint commemorated this by depicting a special commemorative design on the bi-colour R5 circulation coin. The design of the 90th Anniversary coin commemorates the history of the Bank and how South African currency mirrors the changing economic and political developments. This was captured by a collage of coins and a banknote in the design.
The following coins, from left to right, are set out in the design:
The British gold sovereign; the R5 coin, minted in 2008 in honour of former President Nelson R Mandela’s 90th birthday, takes prominence. It is included in the design as a unifying coin and to highlight the immense contribution Mr Mandela made in the history of South Africa; the gold Natura coin with the endangered black rhinoceros; the 20c coin reflects one of South Africa’s national symbols, the king Protea; the farthing, the smallest denomination, was in use from 1923 to 1960 and depicts two sparrows sitting on a mimosa branch; the banknote is a circulation note signed by the third Governor of the Bank, Dr M H de Kock, who was in office from 1 July 1945 to 30 June 1962.

Every SA Mint product associated with Mandela enjoys extraordinary popularity in South Africa and, to a growing extent, around the world.
The 90th birthday issue joins a family of similar coins, namely, the 1994 Mandela presidential inauguration R5 and his post-presidential 2000 R5, whose rates of appreciation in the numismatic market make them top performers globally. Of all coins ever minted anywhere, the 2000 R5 has the steepest curve of increasing prices. No other coin comes close.
The Mandela 90th birthday R5 is exciting in itself, regardless of the potential to profit from it. It honours a statesman whose reputation is unsurpassed by those of his contemporaries around the globe. His coin will continue to be coveted collectables. |
